Buyer's Guide

What are Binoculars?

Binoculars (also known as field glasses) are magnification optical instruments used to view distant objects.  These are two telescopes which are mounted together side by side so the user can view distant objects with his/her both eyes simultaneously.  When viewed with these instruments, distant objects are seen magnified and seem closer to the viewer.

What do the numbers in binoculars mean?

When ever you do research on binoculars, you will encounter numbers  in sets like 7×35, 8×25, 10×42, 12×50 and others.  The first number in a set is the magnification number and the second number is the size of the objective lens (objective lens size).

The magnification number (or the strength of magnification) refers to how many times an object is magnified.  Therefore, a binocular with a magnification of 10x means that the object seen through it is magnified 10 times!

On the other hand, the objective lens will determine how much light a binocular can allow to enter which is its ability to gather light.  The higher the number of an objective lens is, the larger the lens will be.  The larger the lens, the more light is allowed to pass through.  In this case, the viewer will have see a brighter image.

Eyecups are binocular parts which are designed to prevent extra stray of light from interfering with the eyepieces when used.  Adjustable eyecups is designed for eye relief.  Some may twist up or down.  Others may be pulled up or down.

As a rule, who wear eye glasses would keep the eyecups down to bring their eyes closer to the lenses for a clearer view.  Those who do not wear glasses would position the eyecups out.

Exit Pupil.

While holding the binoculars away from your eyes, as you look into the eyepiece, you will be able to see a small round light in the middle of the each eyepiece.  The diameter of that circular light is called the exit pupil.

The exact size of an exit pupil can be measured in millimeters by dividing the objective lens by the magnification number of your binoculars.  So, binoculars with 10×50, its exit pupil size is 5 mm.  The larger the exit pupil of a binocular, the brighter the binocular is.

To guide you in choosing binoculars with what exit pupil, make sure that your binoculars will have the same exit pupil size as your own pupil.  During low light situations, a man’s pupils will open from 5-7 mm wide so that more light can enter the pupil of the eye.  Thus you need to use binoculars which are intended for low light conditions such as at night!

In bright conditions, a human being’s pupil contracts to 2-3 mm.  Any extra light transmitted to the eye will not be used.  Thus, the extra light transmitted is not necessary.

Also, take note that the older a person becomes, the less his pupil dilates in the dark. Thus a compact binocular with a smaller exit pupil, will still seem to be viewed brightly by an older person.

Lens Coatings.

Lens coatings will help eliminate any glare.  Every lens may lose 5 percent of light that passes through without any coatings. Thus, the use of coatings will allow as much light to enter every lens.  The more coatings a lens has, the more expensive it becomes.  Thus it is understandable why some binoculars (especially the more expensive branded ones) are more expensive than others.

Here are four different coating descriptions:

Coated – a thin single layer of anti-reflective coating is present in one or more of its lenses.

Fully-coated – there is a thin single layer of anti-reflective coating applied on all sides of the lens system.

Multi-coated – multiple layers of coatings have been applied on one or more of the lenses.

Fully multi-coated – multiple layers of coatings have been applied on surfaces of the lenses.  This is usually found among high end binoculars.

Knowledge on lens coatings is also very important as photography tips when choosing lenses for dslr cameras.

Field of View.

By using a binocular, the size of an area that can be seen is called the field-of-view.  Suppose there are two objects which are 1000 yards away from you.  And these objects are 200 feet apart from each other.  When you use your binocular and you see both of these objects, the field of view of your binocular is 200 ft  at 1000 yards.

Lower powered binoculars give a larger field of view.  High powered binoculars give a small field of few.

Bak-4 Prisms vs BK-7 prisms

Inside the binoculars, there are prisms that act like mirrors.

Bak-4 prisms have been considered to be the best type of Porro prism.  These are made with superior optical glass that create clearer images.

BK-7 prisms are inferior to the Bak-4 prisms.  They are usually found in lower priced binoculars.

Factors To Consider In Buying Binoculars

  • You budget.  Decide which price range can you afford to buy one.  While the best binoculars give you crisp images with all the other perks that come with it, they may not be within your price range.  However, technological advances have made it possible to have lower priced binoculars with excellent value!

  • Choose your magnification.  Your choice of which magnification you want all depends on your preference.

  • Be aware who will be using it.   Consider if you or the person you intend to give these binoculars is using eye glasses.  If you or they do, you might want to consider buying one with an adjustable eyecups.

  • Also, be aware for what purpose will you be using these binoculars.

  • Last but not the least, you may want to consider the manufacturer’s warranty.  Be aware that you may be investing on higher end products.  The best binoculars for hunting may fall on the higher end products, check the warranty that comes with it.
